A daisy is usually sweet and innocent. These daisies are anything but.
Dark, weathered and almost archaeological, these oversized flowers have the feeling of something unearthed rather than newly made. Hand-forged steel is fused with bright copper, then given a soft Japanese brown patina that settles into the richly textured surface. Rare Russian turquoise glows unexpectedly from the center of each flower.
I especially love the tension in these earrings—pretty and primitive, flower and artifact. They celebrate the beauty of nature without making it precious or perfect.
The turquoise is visible from both sides. I intentionally opened the steel behind each stone so its naturally rough-hewn back remains part of the design. As the earrings move, there is something interesting to discover from every angle.
Bold at 3 inches long and 2 inches wide, these are true wearable sculptures. Pair them with black for an art opening or author talk, or wear them more casually with linen and denim to an indie music festival.
Each flower is cut, hammered, fused, soldered, patinated, waxed and buffed by hand before I set the turquoise. No molds, no duplication. The two flowers are sisters rather than twins, each carrying the marks of fire, hammer and hand.
